Slideshow Presentation Script

Nick Cave is a sensational installation artist who uses dance; fiber arts; found objects and a constant search for change to create brilliantly joyful and visceral pieces that draw on his experiences of/thoughts on racial injustice and otherness.

“I had to find my identity by deconstructing things, taking things apart, and rebuilding them”

Cave grew up in Fulton, Missouri, where he grew accustomed to reusing and repurposing all the things around him; as his mother said, "[taking] care of the things you use". He later followed his brother to art school before taking his own path into installation-focused works. Friendship with renowned dancer/activist Alvin Ailey, and time studying at his Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, introduced movement and dance as expression to Cave's art practice. Cave points to dancing as a way to literally "work it out"- process his experiences/thoughts/feelings, etc.

"There is something in the act of bodies moving that is a different kind of problem solving."
