Some texture ideas for the bottom-most layer, except final would be made with the flexible version of this material.

| Some sort of collection, like bottles, could take up some of the space underneath, along with another blanket for people to crawl on? Other things in this installation would be some sort of fan to blow against the fabric, and maybe a speaker to play rolling white noise or "sleeping dragon"? |
Other Idea/ Doorknob Installation
I had this idea while playing with scenic supplies at work.
Mini version. Wire twists in place of doorknobs
Doorknobs like this:
The weathering/rusted trails of stuff look like something is leaking through/dripping down, rather than just a sign of old age. Ideally people would be able to walk up and turn the doorknobs.
Your breathing installation idea sounds so restful! For the doorknob idea - are you thinking of making your own doorknobs or foraging for doorknobs in the wild/antique stores/etc., or both? I think pushing the idea of what can be a doorknob and crafting new objects that can function to open doors but don't resemble typical doorknobs at all could be really cool.
